Where do I have to pay attention to when buying a hockey stick?

How long does your hockey stick exactly need to be?

We have noticed that there are a lot of stories around about how you would be able to measure the right size stick for your height. Fortunately there is a way to check the correct length of the stick for your height. Take the hockey stick and place the top inside your armpit, then hold the stick against your leg. If you now can touch and lift the inside of your knee with the top of the curl, then the stick has the right size. If the top of the curl is far below the inside of the knee, then the stick is too long and definitely not suitable for you to play with. If the top of the curl is reaching above the inside of the knee then the hockey stick will be too small and you’re recommended to buy another or new one.

Remember selecting the right length a hockey stick is vitally important, for all ages (junior / senior) and heights.

Check the following, do I have to bend to low and feel I’m damage my back (your stick is to small)? Can I control the head of the stick when I swing to hit the ball or is the head of the stick controlling me (your stick is to long)? If one of these is the case about your hockey stick, you should really consider buying a new one.

Weight of the hockey stick

You can hit harder with a heavier hockey stick, this perhaps is true. But, this goes together with the loss of the technical and quick team play. The curl is in fact the most important for weight of the stick. When you are young or you are not strong enough, it can be useful to get some support hitting the ball. Then it’s smart to buy a stick with a nice big convex and curl. This way you can hit the ball better without using too much energy.

Buying a new hockey stick
One of the most frequent questions we get is; why aren’t there any left handed hockey sticks? Reason for this is that the use of left handed sticks is illegal. It would be too dangerous for a left handed player to tackle an on-coming right handed player, because they would need to tackle around the back of their legs therefore left handed players use a right handed stick.

My hockey stick isn't straight?

GREAT a hockey stick should not be straight. If you place you stick down with the convex site facing up you should be able to see a gap of about 1 inch between the surface it’s placed on and the hockey stick.

Hockey Stick Maintenance

After training leave your stick drying standing up, please do not place your stick near a heat source such as a heating installation or radiator.

DO NOT oil your stick, this will make the wood weak and soft.
